We are proud to welcome you all to MIE2011 and Oslo, Norway. Looking back, when the Norwegian Society for Medical Informatics hosted MIE in 1988, the conference was vibrant with sharing of new ideas, of prototypes demonstrating how health professionals could improve their daily work, and of hope for how this new technology could improve health care in the future. Today, at MIE2011, twenty-three years later, the future is here. Our clinical environments are full of health informatics achievements like electronic health records, digital images, automated medication handling, work lists, to mention a few, to support health professional in most areas of health care; community health, primary care and hospitals.

However, Information and Communication Technology is not only replacing manual tasks – new forms of interaction and coordination between professionals emerge. The doctors and nurses of today will access the electronic record for information rather than consult a colleague, go to the web for images rather than to the radiology department, or call up the messaging system rather than go to the ward for updates and instructions. Health professionals meet a new reality with new opportunities – but also new challenges. How is this reality, what are the challenges, and how can we learn from the merging experiences? These were among the questions that led us to the theme of this conference – focusing on the users in a networked health care. We hope the discussions during the MIE2011 conference will contribute to a broader understanding of such questions.

New hospitals today are not only built with advanced technology, they are founded on advanced technology. Akershus University Hospital, opened in 2008 and finalized this year, counts as one of the technologically most advanced hospitals in Europe. We are of course very grateful that the hospital invited us to study their achievements and learn from their experiences. We hope the hospital visit will set the scene for the conference.

For MIE2011, we have tried to build upon the tradition and experiences of past conferences, but also to add some new elements that we hope you will enjoy. The hospital visit is one of the new additions to the MIE conferences. In addition, we are exploring new submission formats, like Short Communications, and we offer you the new, application oriented initiatives “Partnership in Innovation” and MIE Village of the future featuring achievements ready to be implemented.

It is our hope that you will enjoy the rich program offered during MIE2011, as we welcome you to take part in these diverse activities.

We welcome you to MIE2011 and Oslo, Norway!
